Lenten Sermon Series – The Hero’s Journey
Join us for the 2023 Season of Lent (six weeks leading up to Easter), as we look to the heroic journey of Jesus and reflect on the ways that God is calling us to heroic journeys of our own. Based loosely off Joseph Campbell’s book, The Hero’s Journey, we will follow Jesus through his call to adventure, leaving behind the ordinary world, enduring great struggles along the way, finding mentors to help guide him, obtaining the greatest gift, and then returning back to his own people to share this new gift. Join us each Sunday up through Easter Sunday. The journey awaits.
Lenten Tuesday Night Study Group: Tuesdays Feb. 28th- April 4th, 2023, 7:00 pm in the Parish House
During this Lenten season, Rev. Corey will be hosting a book study with Amy-Jill Levine’s book “Entering the Passion of Jesus: A Beginner’s Guide to Holy Week,” which can be purchased here or here. The final days of Jesus were full of risk. Every move Jesus made was filled with anticipation, danger, and the potential for great loss or reward. Jesus risked his life when he dared to teach in the Temple. His followers risked everything when they left behind their daily lives to follow him. For two thousand years, people have taken risks in reading these ancient stories and applying their wisdom to their modern daily lives. In Entering the Passion of Jesus: A Beginner’s Guide to Holy Week, author, professor, and biblical scholar Amy-Jill Levine explores the essential biblical texts surrounding the Passion story of Jesus. AJ Levine shows us how these sacred texts raise ethical and spiritual questions for us today as people of faith. Join us to discuss one chapter each week.
Volunteer at NuDay Syria with Rev. Corey: Saturday, March 18th 12-2pm OR Friday, March 31st 5-8pm
I’ve been working with NuDay Syria for many years. You sort donations, pack them in boxes, load them into a shipping container, and they’re sent to Syria (Lebanon, Ukraine too). NuDay Syria began working in the Refugee Camps due to the Civil War but has been multiplying its efforts due to the recent earthquakes. Caveat Emptor: It’s almost an hour’s drive to the north, the warehouse will be cold, you’ll get dirty, and you’ll work hard, BUT you will meet the coolest people and do something tangible to help people in deep need. Check in with Rev. Corey to make plans.
Thursday Morning Bible Study: Thursday Mornings, 10:00am, in the Parlor
The Thursday Morning Bible Study is led by Marvin Caldwell. This is a divergent group of people who use the Bible as a baseline. Conversations explore the meanings that lie in the text for us. Conversation is lively and respectful. We welcome all who want to share interpretation and application of our Scriptures.
